Book Reivew: What the Heart Sees

What the Heart Sees: A Collection of Amish Romances
What the Heart Sees by Kathleen Fuller is a collection of 3 Amish romances. Which include, A Miracle for Miriam, A Place of His Own, and What the Heart Sees.

A Miracle for Miriam
Miriam is at an marriageable age, yet she doesn't seem to interact all that well with the other young adults her age, that is until she meets up with Seth.  Seth is one who has left Miriam with bad memories after tormenting her in school many years ago, will it take a miracle for Miriam to forgive him?

You'll have fun reading this stories and it just may bring back memories of your younger days...did you have a tormentor?

A Place of His Own
Josiah is the main character in this story, he has been gone from the Amish community for quite some time, and when his childhood friend and neighbor, Amanda, learns he has returned she is overjoyed.  Overjoyed until she spends some time with Josiah.  He has changed and he's not the friend she remembers, but as curious as Amanda is, will she be happy when Josiah's truth is revealed, and what will it take to soften his heart?

This is a story that will make you hope, hope for love and happiness, you will fall in love with Amanda, she has such a cheery soul.

What the Heart Sees
This is  a story that will make you realize that sometimes your heart and your head do not always see eye to eye.  Ellie has been blinded in an awful accident, who is going to love her now that she can't see?  I imagine that is a question a young woman would ask herself, but just because she is blind does not mean she is unlovable.  Christopher also lost something in the same accident that Ellie lost her sight and has been forced to move away, when he returns to Paradise things don't always go smoothly as Christopher and Ellie face their past and their healing.

A heartbreaking story, but one that will make you fall in love with the characters, it is a story of forgiveness and love.

With just over 400 pages in this book, each story is a very quick read, I actually was surprised when I finished A Miracle for Miriam, I couldn't believe how quickly the story went.  While the three of these stories are fairly predictable Amish romances, they are still enjoyable for a lazy day read.  It doesn't seem to matter how many different Amish books I read, I always learn something new, and Kathleen Fuller didn't disappoint me as I once again traveled through the lives of different Amish couples.

CFBA: Book Review: False Pretenses

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
False Pretenses
David C. Cook (March 1, 2011)
by
Kathy Herman

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Suspense novelist Kathy Herman is very much at home in the Christian book industry, having worked five years on staff at the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and eleven years at Better Books Christian Center in Tyler, Texas, as product buyer/manager for the children’s department, and eventually as director of human resources.

She has conducted numerous educational seminars on children’s books at CBA Conventions in the U.S. and Canada, served a preliminary judge for the Gold Medallion Book Awards of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association , and worked as an independent product/marketing consultant to the CBA market.

Since her first novel, Tested by Fire, debuted in 2001 as a CBA national bestseller, she's added sixteen more titles to her credit, including four bestsellers: All Things Hidden, The Real Enemy, The Last Word, and The Right Call.

Kathy's husband Paul is her manager and most ardent supporter, and the former manager of the LifeWay Christian Store in Tyler, Texas. They have three grown children, five almost-perfect grandchildren, a cat named Samantha. They enjoy cruising, deep sea fishing, and birdwatching—sometimes incorporating these hobbies into one big adventure.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Zoe Broussard loves the life she and her husband Pierce have built in her beloved Louisiana hometown. She owns a thriving Cajun eatery in South Louisiana and is married to the love of her life.

But it’s about to become hell. One day, out of the blue, she receives a series of anonymous notes that sends her life into a tail spin. Five simple words, “I know what you did.” Zoe has a secret so terrible it could leave the business in shambles and tear her marriage apart. Unbeknownst to anyone, even Zoe’s husband, Pierce, she has a past—a past she had covered so well she never thought she would have to confront. How could anyone know what she did? Can she find the courage to face her past?

If you would like to read the first chapter of False Pretenses, go HERE.

MY THOUGHTS:
This is a book that will make you think twice before you hide the truth.  Sometimes hiding things seems like the best but as you read False Pretenses you will quickly realize how deeply you can dig yourself into a hole and how painful it can be when truths are revealed.

There is a fine line between secrets and lies and Zoe is thrown into a web as her deceit slaps her in the face, I enjoyed this story and it was a very good reminder about why not to lie!  Not a quick read, this is one I took slowly, there is a lot going on here.

All in all a good read to save for one of those stormy spring/summer nights or days when you feel like holing up in the house!  But beware of the danger lurking around the corner.

Easter Bling: Tutorial

A few of my faithful followers requested a tutorial on the 4H project I posted over the weekend.....I took it a step further on Sunday and decorated Easter eggs using the same technique, AWESOME!

Here's the deal though, if you use this tutorial I would LOVE to see photos, so pass them along!!!

Gather your supplies:
1.  Glass paint, found at your local craft store or Wal Mart
2.  Enamel paints, I found mine at Michael's they are sold by the model cars, the brand is Testors
3.  Glass jar or vase
4.  Disposable paintbrush
5,  Bucket of water deep enough to submerge your vase
6.  Paper Towels
7.  Toothpicks, I tried plastic forks, you do NOT want to use them, the paint adheres to the plastic!
8.  Rubber Gloves, not needed but suggested!

Step 1:  Paint your jar or vase with glass paint, if you're doing this with kids it works great if you buy a vase with a large mouth so the kids can put their entire hand in the vase and tip it upside down to paint!

Step 2:  Let your vase dry, then apply a second coat, do this gently so the first coat doesn't come off.  It should look like the photo below.

Step 3:  Here's where it starts getting really fun and messy!  Shake up your paints real well, then put some paint in your water.  Tip the paint very slightly, it comes out fast and you don't need much!  The gold tends to sink, but don't worry, somehow it shows up on your vase!

Step 4:  Take your toothpick and swirl it through the paint droplets, just a few swirls will do, for little kids, I tell them to draw the letter M, or N through the paint!

Step 5:  This is where it's good to use gloves, I'll show you what happens when you don't!  Anyway, put your fingers in the vase and 'swoop' it through the paint.  The trick is to get the entire vase colored the first time, once it's wet and redipped it doesn't work as well.  So if you put the vase into the paint and give your wrist a twist, flick, or swirl it'll work great!

Step 6:  Once you've dipped, swirled and swooped remove your vase, this is how ours turned out, the paint dries very quickly, place it on a covered surface for the drying time.

Crafter beware:  This is what happens when you don't bother to wear gloves, we dipped the vase for these photos and 9 eggs and this is what happened to my daughter's hands...this was Sunday, today and 3 showers later she still is a bit blue around the finger nails, and not real thrilled with me!!!  Finger nail polish helps to some extent.  Also, if you get it on your counter or sink, steel wool does the trick, as for your bucket, well, you can see from the photo above how the sides will look!

....And here are my Easter Eggs, a little early to make them, but we couldn't help ourselves!!!
My paper mache Easter nest didn't turn out as cool as I expected, but it'll do until I come up with a new idea!

Have fun....and please let me know if something doesn't make sense and I'll help you out!

What is your favorite thing about Easter?

Easter is right around the corner, do you celebrate BIG? Have family traditions, or just go with the flow? Easter, like so many holidays has become commercialized to the hilt, I saw the Easter decorations go up in stores as soon as the Valentine’s came down, it’s difficult to keep up or even enjoy the holiday of the moment!  For now, you can simply enjoy the upcoming holiday with the new movie, HOP.

I wouldn’t put Easter at the top of my list for favorites, I do enjoy the religious aspect of it, but as far as great traditions, I try….but spring while it’s nice to think of warmer weather, just doesn’t happen that quickly in MN. I remember being a little girl, going to the store to pick out my Easter dress and then having to wear it under a winter coat!

I love to dye Easter eggs, I don’t like to eat them, but it’s just plain fun to see what we can come up with each year, even though my kids are teenagers, we still have fun with this! Easter is all about subtlety for me, just a few colored eggs, a fluffy little chick and some knit eggs lay around my house…if I’m lucky I have a few daffodils or tulips in my garden to decorate the table!

Easter dinner just calls out ham and cheesecake, whether we’re with our families or alone for Easter we just must have our ham dinner! What do you eat for Easter dinner? My in-laws always hide little chocolate eggs around the house for us to nibble on when we’re there…my mom always colors eggs with the grandkids and I’m not sure what kind of traditions I’ll have when I have grandkids, but I do know it’ll include ham and cheesecake!  I also love Easter candy, but you know how the saying goes, "they don't make it like they used to"  I used to love the chocolate eggs filled with the different flavored creams, but my standby favorite is the good ole Cadbury egg!

On the funny side of Easter:
One year I went crazy and made jello in the shape of a rabbit, and a rabbit shaped cake….have you done anything crazy? Or had any great mishaps?

I do have to question the rabbits and eggs, why is it a rabbit that delivers the eggs? I just don’t get that part, shouldn’t the chicken be doing it? Where does the rabbit come into the equation? I suppose it could be that the chicken would feel bad if it were giving away all of its eggs, but generally speaking, they should be used to it!! Oh, and what about the squirrels that steal the plastic eggs hidden in the trees and bushes? I’ll bet they get pretty excited about finding such a spectacular treat for their bounty!

All in all Easter is a time to be thankful, it’s one of those days where churches are full, people are happy and stores make a killing, and it's a wonderful excuse to be with family. When Easter comes close we just know that spring is bound to happen, especially this year with such a late Easter how can spring NOT be around the corner?

I would love to hear about your traditions…a special meal, a movie, hiding baskets, what do you do?

Maybelline SuperStay 24™ 2-Step Lipcolor

I received several colors of Maybelline SuperStay 24™ 2-Step Lipcolor for review.  Have you tried this product?  I can see a need for super stay lip color, when you're at work you don't want to keep re-applying your lipstick, and really, who wants to be continually looking in a mirror on a date wondering how your lips are looking?  How about when you take a drink and leave your lip print on the glass?  I really don't like it when guests do that to me, it can be quite difficult to remove the waxy print, and to have a lip print of someone staring at me when I open my cupboard door can be a bit unnerving.

So, my thoughts on the product?  My daughter and I both tried it out.  It was in the evening and we quite honestly had no need for lipstick what-so-ever, but wanted to have a little fun!  My daughter put on a deep red, which looked terrible on her, just not her color, I used a lighter color which actually did suit me.  This lip stick has a 2 part process, once the color dries, you apply a gloss which really makes it look nice and finished.  Here's the scoop.  Once mine was dry I brushed my teeth and took a drink of water, not typically what you would do right after applying lipstick, but it was bedtime!  Anyway, the lip color did not budge and did not leave any prints on the glass, the only part that does not stay on is the gloss.

On to my daughter and her brilliantly red lips.....like mine, didn't come off, only in her case, it really should have.  This is the down side to 24 hr. lip color, it takes a steel wool pad or a grinder to actually remove it....not really, but after scrubbing and scrubbing her lips my daughter was able to turn her lips to a bit of a lighter shade and said they felt rather raw.  Upon waking in the morning both of us still had lips that looked as if we had just applied the lipstick, so it does live up to its name!

I would recommend this product for those of you who love to wear lipstick but don't love reapplying it throughout the day, just be sure to pick a color you like, and don't wait to try it out until you're walking out the door, because if you don't like it, you're stuck with it!  Now, there may be a secret to removing it, but if there is, I'm not aware of it!  Oh, I do like the fact that it doesn't have that 'lipstick' taste, and it seems as though the darker colors are a bit stickier than the light, but once it dries there is no difference!

**I received samples of Maybelline SuperStay 24 2-Step Lipcolor from BzzAgent for review, I was not compensated in any other way for my honest opinion.

DVD Review: The Grandfathers

Brief Description from DVD Cover:

A young man searches for his identity while living among the tribe that murdered his grandfather.  The Grandfathers is a motion-graphics film by writer/director Jim Hanon and produces Mart Green.  It is the last film in the trilogy that included the documentary Beyond the Gates of Splendor and the feature film End of the SpearThe Grandfathers is the story of Jesse Saint's quest for significance and wholeness in a world inspired by Nate Saint, the grandfather he never knew and shaped by a father he struggled to understand.  Only after living deep in the Amazon jungle and befriending the men who murdered his grandfather, does Jesse find a greater meaning and purpose for his life.

MY THOUGHTS:
This is quite a  movie!  I enjoyed how there were graphics splattered throughout the film, they tended to lighten the mood a bit!  I have not watched the first two DVD's but did not feel as though I was lost in the middle of a story, this DVD can stand on its own.

Throughout the film Jesse tells his story switching from the short graphic blips to himself and scenes from the Amazon.  As I watched I was nothing short of amazed by how this family was so incredibly forgiving that they could live in the jungle with the very people who had murdered their father/grandfather, and then invite them into their home in the United States!  Throughout the film you learn quite a bit about the Waodani people, their past, and what they are facing in the future as generational gaps become more apparent.

One of my favorite moments in the film was when the college students came for a visit and were having a conversation while sitting at the fire, I'm not going to reveal any more than that it was quite charming to see the reactions of the students as the Waodani answered their questions!

I thoroughly enjoyed this film and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in missionaries, or tribes of the Amazon!  This is a Christian film and while it does speak of murder it is done so in a way that would not be disturbing to younger children.

4H Class

My daughter made this one as a sample

Today our county had what we call Project Workshop Day for our 4H'ers.  I usually teach a cake decorating class but this year decided to do something new and exciting, but probably just as messy! I taught about how water and oil don't mix, and why and tied it all in with the oil spill....it was pretty fun, had a lot more kids in my classes than planned on so I had to do a bit of scrambling....thank goodness I purchased extra's. For the project part we did a paint technique, we painted the white coats in between the experiments so it could dry a bit, then we did the dipping last. I thought the vases turned out awesome, my hands were far too messy to take photos during the class but I did catch a few of the vases before the kids took them home!

This one is my sample using A LOT of paints

Some vases from my class

More class vases

Aren't they awesome, you use a technique where you paint the base layer white, then after it has dried you pour paints in water and swirl your vase through it.  Two girls used the exact same colors, did it at the same time and ended up with 2 vases that were entirely different!  It's all in the swirl!!!

Now I'm thinking.....EASTER EGGS?  Wouldn't they look neat?!

CFBA: Book Review: Vicious Cycle

Vicious Cycle (Intervention, Book 2)

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Vicious Cycle
Zondervan (February 22, 2011)
by
Terri Blackstock

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over six million copies sold worldwide. She has had over twenty-five years of success as a novelist. She sold her first novel at the age of twenty-five, and has had a successful career ever since.

Besides entertaining her readers, Terri tackles issues that she hopes will change lives. Her recent book, Predator, was inspired by her experiences on Facebook and Twitter, and her concern that people posted too much personal information about themselves. The book deals with an online predator who uses social networks as his playground. She hopes the book will change readers’ online habits. Her New York Times best-seller, Intervention, was inspired by her own personal struggles with a daughter on drugs. In the book, a mother hires an interventionist for her drug-addicted daughter. But on the way to treatment, the interventionist is murdered, and the daughter disappears. Barbara, the mother, sets out to search for her daughter. Terri modeled Barbara after herself, and poured many of her own emotions and experiences into that character. As a result, many families experiencing drug addiction have written to thank her for telling their story and giving them hope. Vicious Cycle, Book Two of the Intervention Series, releases February 22, 2011. She’s currently working on Book Three.

Other recent books include a stand-alone novel called Double Minds, as well as Last Light, Night Light, True Light and Dawn’s Light (from her acclaimed Restoration Series). She is also known for her popular Newpointe 911 Series and Cape Refuge Series. Terri makes her home in Mississippi, where she and her husband Ken are enjoying their empty nest after raising three children.

Terri has appeared on national television programs such as “The 700 Club” and “Home Life,” and has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When fifteen-year-old Lance Covington finds an abandoned baby in the backseat of a car, he knows she's the newborn daughter of a meth addict he's been trying to help. But when police arrest him for kidnapping, Lance is thrust into a criminal world of baby trafficking and drug abuse.

His mother, Barbara, looks for help from Kent Harlan---the man whom she secretly, reluctantly loves and who once helped rescue her daughter from a mess of her own. Kent flies to her aid and begins the impossible work of getting Lance out of trouble, protecting a baby who has no home, and finding help for a teenage mother hiding behind her lies.

In this latest novel of suspense and family loyalty, bestselling author Terri Blackstock offers a harrowing look at drug addiction, human trafficking, and the devastating choices that can change lives forever.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Vicious Cycle, go HERE.

Watch the Book Video:

MY THOUGHTS:
This is book 2 in the Intervention Series, and it is Vicious indeed!  As I read this book I felt deeply fortunate for the kind of life my family lives.  When you read of Emily in drug rehab and of 15 year old Jordan who has a meth baby and the intense struggles she has you will be reminded that there are truly people out there with these problems.  They most likely don't have the drama in their lives that unfolds in this book, but I'm sure they have the personal struggles with drugs like those in the book.  It is a humbling read and makes you want to grab your children and hold them tight.

When 15 year old Lane is thrown into the mix and lands in jail you realize how scary life is, how easily it is to be in the wrong place and be wrongly accused, Lane's only problem was having a loving heart.  I thought this was an excellent book, it certainly opened my eyes and I would recommend having your teens read it, just to see how terrible this addiction is.

Book Review: Love Amid the Ashes

Love Amid the Ashes: A Novel

FROM THE BACK COVER:
An epic story of love and forgiveness, suffering and restoration
When her beloved grandfather Isaac dies, Dinah must follow his final command: travel to Job's household to marry his son. After Job's world comes crashing down, Dinah finds herself drawn to this great man brought low. What will she risk to fight for his survival?
Mesu Andrews weaves an emotional and stirring account of Job and Dinah. Love Amid the Ashes breathes life, romance, and passion into the classic biblical story of suffering and steadfast faith.
Endorsements
"In Love Amid the Ashes, Mesu Andrews takes a biblical tale of great tragedy and skillfully weaves beauty and love amid the loss. Job's story brought vividly to life!"--Jill Eileen Smith, bestselling author of Michal and Abigail
"Mesu Andrews has skillfully brought the Old Testament story of Job to life in Love Amid the Ashes. Throughout this book she explains Job's faithful adherence to studying the teachings of El Shaddai. Then she creatively reveals how those principles are demonstrated by his interaction with Dinah. You will be moved to tears as the characters reflect the mysterious role suffering plays in our faith. If you enjoy a story that includes a powerful plot, romantic passion, and biblical truth, read this book!"--Carol Kent, speaker and author of between a Rock and a Grace Place

MY THOUGHTS:
Wow.....loved this book.  I have read several different books based on Bible stories lately, all from different authors and Love Amid the Ashes was everything I hoped for.  I loved reading about Job, learning more about him and the fact that Mesu was able to take a story from the Bible and turn it into a novel while keeping true to the Bible is simply amazing to me.

The story begins with a time chart which was extremely helpful to me, I also enjoyed the different Bible verses at the beginning of each chapter.  As I read this story I could feel the pain that Dinah felt her entire life and the great love she had despite her cruel treatment.  I simply loved her interactions with her young maid, she showed her so much kindness, but as you will learn, Dinah had a very kind soul.

Job, he was one who could so easily be disliked, yet his character also showed much compassion and love, how he could survive a wife like Sitis I do not know, this shows how great his spirit was, as for Sitis, her life took quite an unexpected turn which only goes to show us that we cannot take our happiness nor our life as we know it for granted.  As the drama unfolds in this book it keeps you turning the pages as you wait to see what will happen to the great city of UZ and those living within it's walls.

I cannot wait to see Mesu Andrews' next book!

Book Review: Passport Through Darkness

Passport through Darkness: A True Story of Danger and Second Chances

From the back cover:
"Kimberly Smith was an average American churchgoer, wife, and mother-until she dared to ask God His dreams for her life.  Traveling around the world and deep into the darkness of her own heart, Kimberly's worst fears collided with her faith as she and her family discovered the atrocities of human trafficking.  But it was in that broken place that a self-centered life was transformed into an international effort to save thousands from modern-day slavery, persecution, disease, and genocide.

Through painful trials, serious errors, and gut-wrenching fear, Kimberly reminds us of what God will do when one person puts her life on the line for His purpose.  Along the way, she inspires you to discover your own story-to live your purpose and feel God's pleasure.  Here you will find courage to live the life God dreamed of when He first dreamed of you."
MY THOUGHTS:
This is an awe inspiring, thought-provoking book.  If Kimberly's story doesn't pull at your heart, nothing will.
Do you ever wonder what your purpose is in life?  Kimberly did, and when she asked God that very question, she soon had an answer and found herself traveling to places she never imagined and finding herself in situations most of us would run from.

As you read this story you will learn that it's ok to put away your fear, to step beyond your comfort zone and reach out to help others not quite so fortunate as we are.  Fear can push us beyond our limits and at times our fear can be quite useful.  As I read this book I couldn't imagine myself in most of the situations Kimberly found herself in, but then I imagine that Kimberly never imagined she'd be in them either!

Not only have Kimberly and her husband earned my deepest respect, but their children as well.  These are people with heart, with courage and a gigantic love for people as well as God.

Book Review: Tandem

Tandem: A Novel

From the back cover:
As obsession and loss become dark partners, how far must the people of Abbey Hills go to survive?

Six months ago, brutal murders shook the small Ozark town—murders that stopped after a house fire reportedly claimed the killer’s life. Lauryn McBride's family auction house has taken responsibility for the estate sale of one of the victims—the enigmatic Markus Chisom. Submerging herself in Chisom’s beautiful but strange world, Lauryn welcomes the reprieve from watching Alzheimer’s steal her father from her, piece by piece. She soon realizes that centuries-old secrets tie Abbey Hills to the Chisom estate and a mysterious evil will do anything to make sure those secrets stay hidden. Even the man who grew up loving her may not be able to protect Lauryn from the danger.

When Amede Dastillon receives an unexpected package from Abbey Hills, she hopes it might be the key in tracking down her beloved sister, long estranged from her family. Visiting Abbey Hills seems the logical next step in her search, but Amede is unusually affected by the town, and when mutilated carcasses begin turning up again in the small community, the local law enforcement isn’t sure if they are confronting a familiar evil or a new terror.

Two women brought together by questions that seem to have no answers.  Can they overcome the loss and darkness threatening to devour them—or will their own demons condemn them to an emotional wasteland?

MY THOUGHTS:

Tandem threw me for a bit of a loop, it is not the kind of book I generally read and I can honestly say that if I had realized the book was about vampires I would not have requested it.

This book is not all bad, it did have an interesting story line which kept me going, I just have a difficult time wrapping my head around the thought of vampires in our midst.

While I don't know much about this genre, I did learn some new things about vampires and reading this book made me all the more thankful that I have God in my life!

I think this book strongly suggests a need to believe and does show a great sense of love when you read of how Juliette is honor bound to care for Amede. This book also shows how twisted individuals can become and how strongly love can influence us.

While this book was difficult for me to get through, I can see that those who enjoy reading of vampires and such would like this book! I also am a bit surprised that this book falls under the category of Christian.
