Book Review: A Marriage in Middlebury

A Marriage in MiddleburyOne decision changed both their lives . . . but will love win in the end? Charlotte Rose Hill enjoys a comfortable life serving up country delicacies, uniquely blended teas, and matchmaking advice for her quirky, devoted customers. The only thing lacking is someone to share it with. At eighteen she denied Sam Wilder’s marriage proposal after his family convinced her to walk away from their relationship. They both moved on . . . or so she thought. When Sam walks back into her life more than a decade later, Charlotte is surprised that her heart still quickens. But is it because of his presence? Or because of the presence of Sam’s new fiancée?

A second chance at love doesn’t happen often, but their past may keep them apart. Is it too late for Sam and Charlotte?

MY THOUGHTS
It's not every day that you get a second chance...with the one you love.  When Sam and Charlotte meet up again, old feelings come alive, only this time, there's a fiance in the way!

This is a very cozy story, the book cover is just a small glimpse of the wonderfully charming town of Middlebury.  It's not every day that you read a book that leaves you wanting to crawl into it's pages.  Anita Higman is an amazing author, one who never fails to deliver.

CFBA: Merry Humbug Christmas

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Merry Humbug Christmas
B&H Books (October 15, 2013)
by
Sandra D. Bricker

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

For more than a decade, Sandra D. Bricker lived in Los Angeles. While honing her chosen craft of screenwriting in every spare moment, she worked as a personal assistant and publicist to some of daytime television's hottest stars. When her mother became ill in Florida, she walked away from that segment of her life and moved across the country to take on a new role: Caregiver.

The author says that it was her 8th novel that opened the door to finding her way as a writer. "I'm a Christian woman, first and foremost," she says. "So it was a bit of a dream-come-true when Summerside Press chose me as one of two authors to launch the Love Finds You line."

Sandie's real-life role as cancer survivor has parlayed into her steadfast commitment to raising awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research. Spearheading a series of devotionals for Summerside Press (such as the popular His Grace is Sufficient...Decaf is Not), the author has stipulated that a portion of each contributor's proceeds will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

"Being allowed to combine my faith and my humor with raising funds for my pet projects ... and still pursue my writing dream," says Bricker, "well, that's the best of all worlds, as far as I'm concerned!"

And one of the author's pet projects is animal rescue, evidenced by the special bond she has created with one particular formerly-abandoned puppy -- a red-haired collie with "killer brown eyes and the heart of the class clown."

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Merry Humbug Christmas features two holiday romance novellas from hilarious and heartwarming author Sandra D. Bricker. -- the perfect gift to yourself or someone else at this most wonderfully stressful time of year.

In "Once Upon a Jingle Bell," A Bah! Humbug cruise to the Mexican Riviera is Joss Snow’s answer to this year’s quest to avoid the holidays completely; at least until she’s rebooked on a different kind of cruise altogether. Candy canes, holly wreaths, reindeer and ornaments seem to be stalking her on the 12 Days of Christmas holiday cruise extravaganza. An escape back to land is her only goal . . . until she meets a kindred spirit in rugged Irishman Patrick Brenneman, and then the game is on! Avoid Christmas festivities at all costs . . . except maybe for that one stop under the mistletoe.

In "It Came Upon a Midnight Deer," Reese’s guilt over abandoning best friend Joss on their holiday tradition of avoiding all things Christmas is trumped by the joy of her recent engagement. Meeting Damian’s family for the first time on idyllic Sugarloaf Mountain is about as far from that Bah! Humbug cruise as she can get, and Reese can hardly wait to get there. But from the moment they hit that deer in the road just two miles from the cabin, everything seems to go wrong. There are no drummers drumming or pipers piping this particular year! And once she sets her future in-laws’ family cabin ablaze, she’s pretty sure there won’t be even ONE golden ring in her future.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Merry Humbug Christmas, go HERE.

MY THOUGHTS
What a fun read.  Can you imagine being named Merry Christmas Snow?  I mean really, what were Joss's parents thinking?  It's no wonder she changed her name!  Joss definitely does not like Christmas and will go to great extremes to stay away from it, which is pretty funny when you think about her ending up on a Christmas cruise of all things.

This is a fun, happy read...no worries, even though Joss doesn't like Christmas, you'll feel the Christmas spirit throughout the entire book...like it or not!

A quirky read, a great book to cuddle up with after a hectic day of shopping!

CFBA: Aloha Rose

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Aloha Rose
Abingdon Press (November 19, 2013)
by
Lisa Carter

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A word from the author:

I am a wife and mother. My husband and I have two daughters and make our home in the beautiful state of North Carolina.

I am a teacher. With a Master’s degree in history, I have taught at the university, high school and middle school levels. After years of church involvement as a soloist, choir member and worship leader, I also teach music.

I am a writer. Delighted by the rhythm and musicality of words, I have been writing since childhood. In 2001, I won the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) Story Writing Contest that re-ignited a lifelong love of writing.

I am on a journey of faith. My ultimate desire through my life and my writing is to proclaim the truth of God’s Word, His redeeming love as seen in the life of Jesus Christ and to help others know for themselves this great, awesome God of all comfort and wisdom. He is enough for every need.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Laney Carrigan sets out to find her birth family, her only clue is the Hawaiian quilt—a red rose snowflake appliquéd on a white background—in which she was found wrapped as an infant. Centering her search on the Big Island and battling fears of rejection, Laney begins a painstaking journey toward her true heritage. Kai Barnes, however, is determined to protect the people he’s come to regard as family. He thinks Laney is nothing more than a gold digger and blocks every move she makes toward her Hawaiian family. As their conflict escalates, it puts at risk the one thing that Kai and Laney both want most—a family.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Aloha Rose, go HERE.

MY THOUGHTS
When I first started this book I just couldn't get into it, so I set it down and went back to it a few days later....it must have just been my mood, because I ended up loving the book!  It was a nice treat to read a book in a lovely tropical setting, a nice change of pace.

Laney is rather prickly in the beginning of the book, but then, if you think about her situation you can understand why.  Kai...he's prickly in an entirely different way, when the two of them butt heads.....well, lets just say they're are both looking out for their best interests.

Things get interesting, and then they get more so.....

A great read!

Book Review: Beloved

Diana is ready to begin a new chapter in her life—until the husband she believed dead reappears at her engagement party.

belovedDiana Brennan came west on the orphan train and was given a home with a loving couple who cherished and spoiled her. At 17, she fell hard for Tyson Applegate, the son of a wealthy mine owner. After a whirlwind courtship and marriage, Tyson took off for adventures around the world, including fighting with the Rough Riders in Cuba. Receiving no word from him in years, Diana’s infatuation with her dashing husband died an ugly death, and she is ready to move past the old pain and marry again, just as soon as Tyson is declared legally dead.

But when Tyson returns, claiming to be a changed man, he wants to reunite with his wife and run for the senate. While Diana suspects the election is his real reason for wanting her by his side, she agrees to maintain his home and to campaign with him, but when it is over, win or lose, she wants her freedom.

He agrees with one condition—she must give him a chance to change her mind about him.

Robin Lee Hatcher

Robin is the author of 65+ novels and novellas. Her home is in Idaho, where she spends her time writing stories of faith, courage, and love; pondering the things of God; and loving her family and friends.

Find out more about Robin Lee at http://robinleehatcher.com.

MY THOUGHTS
Imagine falling in love again, after presuming your husband dead, only to have him re-appear.  What do you do?  Stay with your new love, go back to your old......

Confused and torn, Diana has some pretty serious decisions to make, but, no worries, this is not a serious, stuffy historical romance, it is full of fun, witty and charming characters.

Tyson has come back from the dead, he has changed, but can he get Diana to see that?

...and Brook, is he just going to sit quietly and wait for Diana to make her decision?

This is the last book in this series, it is a stand alone story and really quite enjoyable.  An easy, relaxing read!

A Christmas wedding on the beach—what could be more perfect? Poinsettias and fragrant pikake blossoms, soft sand and mistletoe, the gentle sound of the surf and the wedding march played on a ukulele. This wedding has been a long time coming, with Bane’s trust issues and Leia’s worries about her childlike sister, Eva.

Now they can hardly wait for the day to arrive. Thrilled to be a bridesmaid, Eva keeps trying on her ruffled dress. The tent is reserved, the caterers paid. Everything is going as planned—until Leia’s phone rings and her world skids out of control. A muffled voice informs Leia that Eva’s been kidnapped and will be killed unless Leia calls off the wedding without explanation—and no police! Her sister-in-law, Lauri, suddenly turns up on the doorstep of the lighthouse home Bree shares with her husband, Kade, in Rock Harbor. Secretive and withdrawn, Lauri seems curiously intent on discovering what happened to a parachuter who disappeared in the North Woods along Lake Superior’s icy shore.

As Bree and Samson, her search-and-rescue dog, plunge into the search, Bree wonders if Lauri may know more than she’s admitted about the parachuter. And then the clues lead them to the trail of a young woman whose family fears the worst about her disappearance.

MY THOUGHTS
This is a wonderfully done series, one that I thoroughly enjoyed.  There is nothing better than curling up with a good mystery and although there is kidnapping and death involved in the two books, they are still really quite sweet!  Don't expect a lot of Christmas in these two books, they are more about the time of year than the actual holiday itself.

I have not read any of the other books in the series, and that did not stop me from enjoying these two books, and while I enjoyed these books it would have been fun to see them more developed.

I loved this book, might be one of my favorite Amish books to date. This is a quick read, but a very good one.  Perfect for a little R and R during the busy holiday season.

Rose goes through some difficult times as she deals with the truth of her past, as well as a bit of confusion over her boyfriend whom everyone has told her to forget.  This story is full of lessons in faith, love and hope.

To Know YouJulia Whittaker’s rocky past yielded two daughters, both given up for adoption as infants. Now she must find them to try to save her son.

Julia and Matt Whittaker’s son has beaten the odds for thirteen years only to have the odds—and his liver—crash precipitously. The only hope for his survival is a “living liver” transplant, but the transplant list is long and Dillon’s time is short. His two older half-sisters, born eighteen months apart to two different fathers, offer his only hope for survival.

But can Julia ask a young woman—someone she surrendered to strangers long ago and has never spoken with—to make such a sacrifice to save a brother she’s never known? Can she muster the courage to journey back into a shame-filled season of her life, face her choices and their consequences, and find any hope of healing?

And what if she discovers in her own daughters’ lives that a history of foolish choices threatens to repeat itself? Julia knows she’s probably embarking on a fool’s errand—searching for the daughters she abandoned only now that she needs something from them. But love compels Julia to take this journey. Can grace and forgiveness compel her daughters to join her?

In To Know You, Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel explore how the past creates the present . . . and how even the most shattered lives can be redeemed.

Purchase a copy here.

MY THOUGHTS
Painful pasts are best when you can put them behind you, but when you have to revisit them....
...twists and turns, characters that come alive and tough subjects are what you'll find in this book.  If you like to predict the ending of your books...this one will keep you guessing,  which was refreshing for me.

I really enjoyed this book, not your every day typical romance...this book has 'meat'

CFBA: Derailed

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Derailed
Worthy Publishing (October 8, 2013)
by
Dave and Neta Jackson

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

As a husband/wife writing team, we are enthusiastic about books, kids, walking with God, gospel music, and each other! Together we are the authors or coauthors of over 120 books. (You can see our Publication Record by clicking HERE.) In addition to writing several books about Christian community, we have been privileged to coauthor numerous books with expert resource people on a variety of topics from racial reconciliation to medical ethics to ministry to kids in gangs.

But over the years the we have especially enjoyed writing for children and young people! This includes our award-winning TRAILBLAZER series, historical fiction about great Christian heroes and heroines for young people ages 8-12, and the four-volume HERO TALES: A Family Treasury of True Stories from the Lives of Great Christians, and the companion book, Heroes in Black History.

Somewhere along the way, our own children grew up! Son Julian is Director of Experience Design for the Alder Planetarium in Chicago where he “provides the experience of exploring space” for visitors. He has two sons, Liam Isaac and Elijah David. Daughter Rachel graduated from Eastern Mennonite University and after working in the field of rape-crisis prevention went on to earn a Masters Degree in counseling from the University of Illinois. She is now a counselor at “Uni High School” in Champaign, Illinois. She is the loving mother of Havah Noelle (our first grandchild!) and Noah Zion, our youngest grandchild. The Jackson family also includes a Cambodian foster daughter, Samen Sang, who has four children.

We live in Evanston, Illinois, where for twenty-seven years we were part of Reba Place Church, a Christian church community. We are now members of a multi-racial congregation in the Chicago area.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Forced to give up his hard-earned retirement, Harry Bentley goes back to work as a detective. Receiving a bizarre undercover assignment that sends him across the country by train. Things suddenly go awry when it appears one of his new neighbors may be part of a smuggling ring and suspicion rises about his own son’s involvement in a major drug cartel. The second in the Windy City Neighbors series, Derailed is a contemporary, and often humorous, tale in an urban setting, featuring ordinary people wrestling with the spiritual and practical issues of real life. Intersecting with Grounded (book one), the Jacksons employ their innovative storytelling technique of “parallel novels.” Though each book follows its own drama and story arc, the characters’ lives become intertwined and affect one another. Derailed transports you to Beecham Street—a typical, isolated American neighborhood . . . until hope moves in.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Derailed, go HERE.

MY THOUGHTS
This is the 2nd book in the Windy City Neighbors series, and every bit as fun and exciting as the first!  If you read the first book, Grounded, you may have been left with some questions...you'll find the answers in Derailed, if you didn't read the 1st book, you'll be fine!

Derailed is kind of like reading the flip side of Grounded, you get to 'hear' the other side of the story, this is a parallel book, I've never before read a series like this, but I found myself really enjoying it, it's not often that you get a chance to see the other side of the story!

A great book with a unique twist!

CFBA: Paige Rewritten

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Paige Rewritten
NavPress (October 8, 2013)
by
Erynn Mangum

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A few things about her:

So, if we were having this conversation in person, we would probably be hanging out at Starbucks or one of the cute coffeehouses in town. I’m nuts about all things coffee, I’m crazy about all things pink and girly, and I love, love, love the Food Network! I’m married to my best friend and the most amazing guy ever, Jon. He is amiable toward coffee, does not like anything pink or girly and tolerates the Food Network. So, we make a good match! In July 2010, we became parents to one of the funniest, cutest, sweetest little guys in the whole world (and nope, we aren’t biased at all!), our Nater-Tot, who is legally known as Nathan. Most days, I’m cleaning up messes, making goofy faces, trying to fit some writing in, and just LOVING the life that God has given me!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Paige Alder is in a really good place. She’s dating nice guy Tyler. Her boss has offered her a raise. Her walk with God is strong. Life is great—and that’s when things start to change.

First, the youth pastor at church keeps asking Paige to work with him full-time. Then her sister shows up newly engaged and wanting to reconnect, even though they haven’t spoken in years. And now former boyfriend Luke has come back into her life. How is Paige supposed to know what the right decisions are?

This warm and humorous second book in the Paige Alder series will help young girls work through important issues, such as forgiving others and obeying God.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Paige Rewritten, go HERE

MY THOUGHTS
This is a quick, easy read.....but don't let that fool you, it's a great book!

This is the 2nd book in the series, I didn't read the first, but now I want to because Paige Rewritten is so good.  The end leaves you hanging...waiting for the next book.

Paige has good days, bad days, blah days, has to make decisions and muddle through life like any 20+ year old...what keeps the book fun is her sense of humor.  Not too deep of a story line but it holds true to Christian Fiction, good clean fun!

Book Review: Just One More Thing

This is the book we wish our parents gave us.

Just One More Thing: Before You Leave HomeJust One More Thing: Before You Leave Home is a packed guide to help young adults enter life on their own. In the book, the Gudgels use stories, perspectives, and dialogues to discuss 30 indispensable topics to help teens survive, including: worldview, financial challenges, use of time, career moves, moral dilemmas, sex, painful experiences, and spiritual life, among others. Written from a Biblical perspective, the book is more of a guide to making good decisions than a lecture on how to live., It’s perfect for a parent and teen to go over together or to give as a thoughtful gift. This is a book they’ll reference for years to come.

Purchase a copy here.
Learn more at David and Bernice’s website.

David and Bernice GudgelDave & Bernice Gudgel are committed to walking intentionally with God and helping others do the same. Bernice has a degree in Psychology and has focused her adult life on raising three kids and leading various ministries in the church where people can connect with God and each other. Dave is a pastor and teaches for Walk Thru the Bible.
MY THOUGHTS
As a parent of a teen leaving home, and another not far behind, I knew I had to read this book.

The book is very nicely arranged for future referencing and takes your through different steps to help your child, different ways to talk to your child and covers pretty much everything.  From choices, roommates and love, spending money and debt, religion and more!

Scripture is added throughout the book and this truly is a family friendly book, I wish I had this book when I was leaving home....an excellent resource.

Book Review: Snow on Tulips

Snow on the TulipsA stranger’s life hangs in the balance. But to save him is to risk everything.

The war is drawing to a close, but the Nazis still occupy part of the Netherlands. After the losses she’s endured, war widow Cornelia is only a shadow of the woman she once was. She fights now to protect her younger brother, Johan, who lives in hiding.

When Johan brings Gerrit Laninga, a wounded Dutch Resistance member, to Cornelia’s doorstep, their  lives are forever altered. Although scared of the consequences of harboring a wanted man, Cornelia’s faith won’t let her turn him out.

As she nurses Gerrit back to health, she is drawn to his fierce passion and ideals, and notices a shift within herself. Gerrit’s intensity challenges her, making her want to live fully, despite the fear that constrains her. When the opportunity to join him in the Resistance presents itself, Cornelia must summon every ounce of courage imaginable.

She is as terrified of loving Gerrit as she is of losing him. But as the winter landscape thaws, so too does her heart. Will she get a second chance at true love? She fears their story will end before it even begins.

Purchase a copy here.
Learn more at Liz’s website.

MY THOUGHTS
This book is every bit as beautiful as the cover, beautiful, dangerous and hopeful.

I truly loved this book, I felt the trembling and the fear of the characters, I felt their hope and their love.

Cornelia has lost her husband to the war, her brother, thought gone has appeared and she is hiding him, a rebel, left for dead in the Nazi shooting line survives and is brought to her door, how much can a woman take?

As the story goes on, Cornelia has to face her fears, she finds strength, but what will she do....she has choices to make, choices that mean life or death not only to her, but to those she loves.

This story will evoke fear and you'll be able to hear the Nazi's footsteps, their gunshots and you'll be able to smell the fear of the survivors.  This story is 'real' and heartfelt, an excellent read.

****
Cindy Kelley is the co-author of the novel The Silent Gift, and Traces of Mercy. Her career as a screenwriter with long-time writing partner, Michael Landon, Jr., began with the adaptation of Margery Williams’ classic story, The Velveteen Rabbit, which had a theatrical release. Several television movies followed, most notably Love Comes Softly, (based on Janette Oke’s novel) which won a CAMIE Award and the Epiphany Prize for Movie Guide’s most inspirational television movie of 2003. Cindy and her husband, Jim, make their home in the Southwest; have three adorable grandchildren and four big dogs who rule the house.
ABOUT THE BOOK

From Michael Landon Jr. and Cindy Kelley, authors of The Silent Gift and creators of the hit television film Love Comes Softly, comes an exciting historical romance set in post-Civil War, and filled with suspense and faith-building values.
At the war’s end, a young woman suffers an accident that leaves her unconscious and alone. Waking with amnesia, she takes the name Mercy and wants more than anything to find out the truth of her past. But then a handsome stranger arrives, who may hold the key to everything she has forgotten. What he knows could devastate her future, and even end her life.

Written by two proven storytellers, Traces of Mercy is perfect for anyone who loves historical fiction, prairie-based tales, or just a good romance.

MY THOUGHTS
This is a post-civil war Historical Romance.

Mercy has a past...a past that leaves her as she is found dressed in men's clothing and left with no memories.

This is a book that you won't be able to put down, you just have to keep turning the pages in the hope that Mercy will remember.

A beautiful story, not only filled with drama but with love as well!

Sometimes when a book is written by two authors it becomes stilted and difficult to follow, not this book, it was a joy to read and you just can't help falling in love with the characters, rooting for them as the story unfolds!
