County Fair Photos

Constructed Clothing, Fashion Revue, isn't her dress gorgeous?

Purchased Clothing, my daughter and her Fashionable Friends
Riding English

Western

My daughter prefers English, but does western as well, and she hopes to learn jumping, but first we need to buy a good jumping horse!  She's wearing the jacket I sewed for the occasion which I just happened to finish at 12:30 am the day of the fair!

The dress was a HIT....everyone loved it so the hard work paid off.  Don't think I'm ignoring my son, but he really doesn't do much at the fair, he waits until State Shoot for archery...stay tuned, that's in September!

Also, wish my daughter luck with her dress at State Fair competition.....I'm not proud or anything (smile, smile)

Book Review: In a Heartbeat

In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving

Have you seen the movie The Blind Side?  Well, if you loved the movie, In a Heartbeat, by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy along with Sally Jenkins is the book for you!  This book is written by the real family that is portrayed in the movie with excerpts from each family member as well as actors Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw.  We all know what we heard and saw in the movie, but this book takes the story to a new level.  Learn what makes the Tuohy family click, why they do what they do and how their past shaped who they are today.

The Tuohy family has always left their door open to children in need, what was different about Michael, why did he stay forever while others did not?  I loved how the story included the thoughts of Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw and what they thought about the family...these two characters got to know the family and truly became them in the movie because of the work they put into the characters.  Real family pictures are also included in the book which I always enjoy, they seem to make the real-life family more 'real'!

I recommend this book, even if you have not seen the movie, you will enjoy the book.  This is an all around good story about a wonderful family.

*Thanks to the B&B Media Group I was given a copy of this book to review.  My thoughts are my honest opinion and I have not been compensated in any other way for my review.

Sunbeam Ice Cream Maker, Product Review

Rival 1 Quart Gel Canister Ice Cream Maker Model GC8101-WN
Do you ever stumble upon something that is just a plain ole good deal? Last week I was in Target grabbing some last minute items for the County Fair.  As I was strolling through the aisles I noticed a clearance section and had to check it out...there sat an ice cream maker for only $13.00!!! WOW, how could I pass that up?  Did I need one?  NO, but I bought it anyway!

Today my daughter and I tried it out.  We made the vanilla ice cream recipe and added frozen raspberries, mini marshmallows and chocolate chunks!  Now, if I had read the directions properly I would have added the extras AFTER it was done mixing, but I added them before, which caused the ice cream to turn a lovely shade of raspberry red, and I like that better anyway since now it's raspberry ice cream with marshmallows and choc. chunks!

I would definitely buy this little machine again, the ice cream whips up quickly, you just need to remember to keep the canister in the freezer for the next time you want to make a batch.  It doesn't make a lot, just 1 quart, just enough for a dessert and a small batch makes making more fun since you can always try something new, the possibilities are endless!

I've tried ice cream makers in the past, and have never been quite as happy and in the past I spent quite a bit more than $13!  I will be keeping this one and we'll see how many different flavors we can come up with!

Book Review: The Seeker, by Ann H. Gabhart

Seeker, The: A Novel
She joined the Shakers to escape her troubles …

But unforeseen consequences threaten all she holds dear

Living just thirty miles from a restored Shaker village in Kentucky, Ann H. Gabhart has walked the same paths that her characters might have walked in generations past. Her thorough research provides a convincing and colorful backdrop for her Shaker novels. Gabhart is the author of several novels, including The Outsider and The Believer.  (Taken from www.RevellBooks.com)

The Seeker, by Ann Gabhart, author of The Outsider is a novel full of adventure!  Charlotte Vance, is a spunky, beautiful girl and knows what she wants, the question is, will she get it?  It is the 1860's, the North and South are about the break out in war and Charlotte wants nothing more than to marry her lifelong friend but he up and joins the Shakers.  This alone would send a young woman in love to despair, but add a father who up and marries a woman not much older than Charlotte herself who wants nothing more than money and prestige.  As war comes closer to home Charlotte has her father make good on a promise and Charlotte flees her home hoping to live in the Shaker community and find a way to change her intended's mind.  While living with the Shakers, thoughts of a handsome painter steal frequently into Charlotte's mind.

This book is full of twists and turns, love, forbidden love, slavery, escape, death, danger and hope.  I loved the characters, they came alive in the story making you love some, others, not so much.  I would recommend this book, it is not a serious or heavy read, but a very enjoyable novel.

Book Review, Courting Morrow Little, by Laura Frantz

Courting Morrow Little: A Novel
Courting Morrow Little, by Laura Frantz is one of those books that you just can't put down!  When Morrow was just a young girl her mom, and sister were killed by Shawnee warriors, and her brother was kidnapped, the memories continue to haunt her especially after she returns from living in Philadelphia with her aunt to live once again with her father.  Morrow is deeply afraid of the Shawnee and can't understand why her father has befriended them.  Living away from the shelter of the colony Morrow and her father have plenty to worry about, but yet they remain safe, safe from all but suitors more than willing for Morrow's hand in marriage.  A beautiful woman, Morrow does not fall easily for her suitors, she wishes for love and finds it in the most surprising place of all.  Will Morrow risk everything for love as her father becomes more and more ill with consumption, he lives to see his wishes granted.

Morrow's life seems to be one risk after another, yet full of love, hope and forgiveness.  This book is not simply a book of love and romance, but one of strength and full of lessons to be learned.  History is mixed with adventure keeps this book interesting and you the reader, on your toes wondering what is going to happen next!

Welcome Wednesday and some weird news!

In honor of Wednesday I am once again joining in the Welcome Wednesday blog hop, I am also adding a little weird news fun! Thanks for visiting and don't be shy, leave a comment letting me know you stopped by!

Weird News:  Taken From aolnews.com

(July 13) -- Talk about a hangover.

A man who had too much to drink is recovering today after he attempted to ride a 16-foot saltwater crocodile at a zoo in Australia and was bitten in the leg.

The 36-year-old man broke into the wildlife park after he was thrown out of a bar. He tried to sit on one of the crocodiles, named Fatso, and give him a pat on the head. Police say Fatso didn't appreciate the gesture and bit him.

"Fatso has taken offense to this and has spun around and bit this man on the right leg," Sgt. Roger Haynes of Broome said in a press conference.

The man is lucky to be alive.
Western Australian Police / AP
Fatso, a 16-foot-long saltwater crocodile, lies next to the flashlight left by a drunken tourist who scaled a barbed-wire fence at the Broome Crocodile Park in northwest Australia to pat him. When the 36-year-old sat on Fatso's back, the crocodile turned around and bit him on the leg. The man survived.

"Saltwater crocodiles ... once they get hold of you, are not renowned for letting you go," Haynes said, according to The Associated Press.

The zoo's owner, Malcolm Douglas, said the cool weather may have saved the man's life. "They're cold-blooded animals, so their reflexes slow down," Douglas told The Australian. "If it had been a hot night, he would have been dead."

After sustaining a nasty flesh wound, the man headed back to the bar where he had been kicked out before his reptilian romp. Mark Phillips, the bar's manager, told the BBC that the man returned to the pub that night with pieces of bark sticking out of his leg. He's expected to fully recover.Photobucket

Fashion Review

County Fair is next week and my kids are busy getting their projects ready. My daughter is in Fashion Review where she makes an outfit and models it and does an interview with the judge, she also wears a purchased outfit for judging. The judging for fashion review is a week before County Fair so crunch time is early for us! At 3:00 yesterday she finished her dress, we left home at 4:30 for the judging...actually she got done earlier this year than other years! It's not uncommon for the girls in competition to be hemming their items in the car on the way!

Anyway, inspired by Audrey Hepburn, my daughter chose a beautiful dress to sew. She searched on Ebay for a vintage belt and finding shoes to match was a challenge! The dress is fully lined and turned out gorgeous! We won't know how she did until NEXT Friday at the County Fair Fashion Show, but she's hoping to win a State Fair trip, wish us luck! Doesn't she look beautiful?

Not the best photo, but you can only do so much at the fair with the sun in your eyes!

L'Bri Skin Care Review

Do you have a difficult time finding the skin care that's right for you? Try L'Bri! Debbie H at L'Bri sent me a 10 day sample of skin care to try. I have dry skin and Debbie worked with me to find the correct products for my skin type, you usually don't receive personal skin care consulting at your local store!

I wasn't brave enough to take photos of my skin but I can say that L'Bri left my skin feeling wonderfully soft, and not only does L'Bri have moisturizers and skin care but they also have a line of make-up so you can give your skin complete daily dose of Aloe and healthy products!

About L'Bri, the products are Aloe Based, which of course is very healthy for your skin, the ingredients are all natural and my favorite thing is that the products have the most wonderful scent! One thing I noticed was how incredibly gentle the products seemed, soft and light, no greasiness at all!

What's different about L'Bri products is that they are concentrated so you need to add water to your lotion, etc. that takes a bit of getting used to, but of course you are receiving a lot more product for you dollar since water is not added to the actual item!

If you would like to try L'Bri let Debbie know, you can visit her website at: http://debbiellbriskincare.blogspot.com/

Book Review: Touching the Clouds, by Bonnie Leon

Touching the Clouds: A Novel (Alaskan Skies)
Bonnie Leon is the bestselling author of more than ten historical fiction novels. She stays busy teaching woman's Bible studies and speaking at writing seminars and conventions. She and her husband, Greg, live in Oregon.(Taken from Baker Publishing website)

Touching the Clouds, book One of the Alaskan Skies Series is a novel by Bonnie Leon.  It is 1930 and Kate Evans is a young woman who is full of adventure, so much adventure that she calls off her wedding much to the dismay of her mom and her fiance.  Kate's adventurous, and independent spirit simply does not leave her longing for marriage and children.

Leaving home in her small red plane she flies across mountains towards Alaska seeking a position as a pilot.  Upon landing in Alaska Kate is drawn to the beauty and open skies, landing a job as a pilot is another story altogether.  Kate does land a job, but how will the men treat her?  One man simply does not like her, another falls in love with her.  As Kate flies the Alaskan skies she takes you on some breath holding adventures as she meets many wonderful people.  From Natives to a mysterious man, near death experiences and joy this book never has a dull moment!

I recommend this book, it is full of adventure and wit.  Bonnie Leon certainly knows how to bring her characters to life and bring you into the story in a way that you feel as though you're actually right there witnessing it all!  I cannot wait for book two in this serious!

Book Review: Shades of Morning, by Marlo Schalesky

 Shades of Morning: A Novel
Shades of Morning, by Marlo Schalesky is a heartwarming story about miracles and finding love and hope when you think all is lost.  Marnie has little hope of ever having a miracle in her life, buried in her work at her coffee/book shop she works day in and day out, that is until she receives a letter which will change her life forever.  Marnie does not in any way welcome what is about to happen in her life.  Her sister, whom she has not seen or talked to in years has passed away, leaving a young son behind.  Marnie did not even know she had a nephew, now she's to become his guardian.

Emmit, a young boy is left motherless, will he find love when living with his aunt?  What about his good friend Taylor who have been a father figure to him, torn apart with the death of his mother, will Emmit and Taylor find their way back together?

The twist.....Marnie and Taylor just happen to be still in love with one another in spite of being states apart and not seeing or speaking to each other in many years.

Marnie's box of regrets ties events in this story together weaving it's way through love, sorrow and things that Marnie would like to keep hidden.  We all have an angel in our life, sometimes that angel is where we least expect it, this is a book that will tug at your heart and realize that even when you feel lost there is a way out of the tunnel toward happiness

Book Review: To Those Who Suffer, by Sean Nolan

To Those Who Suffer: Understanding God's purpose and pathway through pain

To Those Who Suffer, by Sean Nolan is a book that tells us what REAL suffering is.  Is having a headache considered suffering, how about having a cold, is that suffering?  You may think so until you read this book.  What about people who are feeling the loss of a loved one, how about those who have amputations, or loss of eyesight, now that is suffering.  No matter how hard these people pray they will not grow back a leg or an arm, their loved ones will not return to life.  It makes you think.

We may ask for help for our suffering but God cannot always help us the way we plan.  For instance, if we are missing an arm, he cannot grow us a new one, but God can definitely teach us how to move on, how to live within our given circumstances.

I the beginning of this book it states that this book may not be for everyone, maybe more for those who have truly suffered.  After I have read this book I know that I have not ever truly suffered, maybe I will someday, but for now, no I have not.  I can see how this book can give people hope and help them understand God's purpose, but I had a hard time reading this book.  It's not a bad book, I just didn't relate to it very well at all.  I did like the message of hope and would recommend this book to anyone who is having a difficult time.

**I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from The B & B Media Group.  I was not compensated in any other way for my honest opinion.
