ABOUT THE BOOK

Pampered Margaret Macy flees London in disguise to escape pressure to marry a dishonorable man. With no money and nowhere else to go, she takes a position as a housemaid in the home of Nathaniel Upchurch, a suitor she once rejected in hopes of winning his dashing brother. Praying no one will recognize her, Margaret fumbles through the first real work of her life. If she can last until her next birthday, she will gain an inheritance from a spinster aunt--and sweet independence. But can she remain hidden as a servant even when prying eyes visit Fairbourne Hall?

Observing both brothers as an "invisible" servant, Margaret learns she may have misjudged Nathaniel. Is it too late to rekindle his admiration? And when one of the family is nearly killed, Margaret alone discovers who was responsible. Should she come forward, even at the risk of her reputation and perhaps her life? And can she avoid an obvious trap meant to force her from hiding?

On her journey from wellborn lady to servant to uncertain future, Margaret must learn to look past appearances and find the true meaning of "serve one another in love."

MY THOUGHTS
What a way to begin the new year......and excellent must read from Julie Klassen.  Mystery abounds in this book along with a little romance as Margaret goes into hiding to keep from marrying...this alone shows the strength of Margaret's character.  Imagine giving up everything, and becoming a servant, doing as others had done for you, and for two previous suitors of whom you need to keep your identity hidden?!   The twists, turns and suspense in this book will keep you on edge as you flee right along with Margaret, be ready for a thrilling journey back in time with The Maid of Fairbourne Hall!

This is a book you won't want to put down and if you enjoyed Julie's previous books, The Apothecary's Daughter and The Girl in the Gatehouse, you won't be disappointed in this book.

  1. I've never been a fan of regencies, but this author's books are now my favorites. She creates the world of 1815 in such a way that I can fully envision the setting, the characters, and a world that seems so different from our own. The plot has moments of intrigue, dashes of romance, and flashes of humor. It's hard to identify one of her novels as my favorite, but this one tops the list. A must read for fans of historical and regency fiction.

  2. I loved the heroine who actually starts out as not very likable but discovers herself along the way. A wide cast of characters make this a quickly shifting and changing scenario with a lot of depth. Julie Klassen has become one of my go-to authors for the historical romance genre - if she writes it, I must read it!
